Barbera d’Asti “Le Orme” – Michele Chiarlo
Producer & Region
- Made by Michele Chiarlo, a well-respected winery in Piemonte, Italy.
- The Barbera grapes come from estates in the Barbera d’Asti DOCG, including vineyards in Nizza, with soils rich in sand (“Astian” sand), limestone, and micro-elements.
Grape & Classification
- 100% Barbera grape
- DOCG designation (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) – this is one of Italy's top quality classifications.
Appearance & Aromas
- Color: Ruby red with violet hues.
- Nose: Elegant and intense, with aromas of fresh, mature red fruit such as cherry and currant. Also, floral touches and subtle earthy or herbal, sometimes slightly spicy undertones.
- Medium-bodied, with juicy acidity (a hallmark of Barbera) and smooth (but noticeable) tannins. Flavor profile: red berries (cherry, plum), some darker fruit, hints of wild herbs, savory tones, possibly a touch of mocha or oak spice depending on vintage.
- Finish: Clean and refreshing, with lingering red fruit, savory minerality, balanced by good structure and freshness.
Food Pairing
- Great with tomato-based pastas, pizzas, and hearty meat sauces.
- Also works with charcuterie, roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and aged cheeses.
Serving / Drinkability
- Best served slightly cool for reds, around 16‑18°C (60‑65°F) to let the aromas open but preserve freshness.
- Can be enjoyed now, but some vintages (especially aged versions) may evolve nicely over a few years.
